According to BabyCenter.com:
This week’s big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he’ll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you’re having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.
In other news: Your baby’s stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body’s growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that’s in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He’s starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby’s liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it’s doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can’t feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist’s hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.
I don’t know what all of this “he” talk is about 😉 But I’ll take a lemon for the week! Kind of makes me want some lemonade. Until I get to the hair part. Ew.
My Symptoms: I’m like the symptom-less pregnant lady. Yeah yeah yeah, be annoyed with me all you want, but it’s kind of unnerving. I’d ‘like’ to have a small bout of nausea (kind of…not really though…) or crazy cravings, sore boobs, whatever else all you other normal pregnant ladies get…just to reassure me that things are going like they should. All I’ve got now is some weight gain (we’ll get to that next), and the fact that if I sit down and get cozy (which takes all of about 5 minutes) I’m OUT like a light.
Weight: As of this morning, I’m up 8lbs, give or take. I’d like to keep it steady here until the next appointment on the 17th (which is a Monday – who schedules a doctors appointment the morning after a weekend?! dumb mistake…) – “they” say the second trimester is when you put on a lot of weight…um, no thanks. Just like, 10 lbs would be good. Please.
*yes, I know I’m not supposed to be worried about weight gain, and as long as I’m eating healthy and exercising, my body will gain what it needs to support a growing baby, I get that and I’m not fighting it, it’s sometimes just hard to see the numbers….moving on.
Gender: Still totally on team Girl. I’m ready to find out. 6 weeks to go!
Maternity Clothes: Wearing some maternity work pants today – these things are brilliant. You can’t tell they’re maternity (unless I stretch my arms up and you can see the band…) and they’re comfy as hell. Seriously, I may never go back to buttons and zippers. 😉
Movement: A couple nights ago I thought I felt something…I told Robert that I couldn’t tell if it was the baby or gas, he reassuringly told me it was gas. Thanks honey. Any day now baby…any day…
Sleep: This has already been mentioned – I can fall asleep like a narcoleptic. I mean, I can control it, I just don’t like to 🙂 And waking up is annoying.
Cravings: Got back on the Christopher’s Chicken Salad wagon this week. And bananas. Maybe not so much a craving, but we’ve had them readily available and I take one to work every day. One of those and a pear – really yummy juicy pears. So I guess I’ve still got the fruit thing going on…Oh, and we’re back to drinking hot coffee again! Hallelujah!
What I miss: Staying up late(r) I guess still fits the bill.
Work Outs: I ran a couple miles on Sunday and a couple on Monday, I brought clothes to do something today but it’s gross and rainy out and we’ve got plans after work (convenient, huh?) so we’ll see what happens …goal is to run 8 to 10 miles per week while I can…I’m up to 4 this week so halfway there.
Best Pregnancy Moment This Week: HELLOOO second trimester! Seriously though, it’s not much different than the first for me. I feel the same as I did before I got knocked-up. It’s weird. Also some of my girlfriends pointed out my ‘bump’ last night. It’s not big, but there’s something there.
OH AND we ordered our first baby gear – and it’s here! REI had a fantastic deal – buy the BOB Stroller and car seat adapter, and get the car seat for free, plus a $20 gift card. We’re also REI members so we get 10% cash back on all purchases. Cha-ching! It arrived to the store yesterday so we’ll pick it up tonight! Woohoo baby stuff!
But we got all black – so it’ll always match everything 🙂 and it’ll work for boy or girl. That’s right, we’re planners.
Questions/Concerns: Just want to hear the heartbeat once and for all, and find out the gender…is that too much?
Goals for next week: I’d really like to make some headway clearing out the office so we can get started on the nursery once we know if it’s a boy or girl. We still haven’t decided what color scheme we’ll go with, but it’d be nice to have a clean slate to work with once we know. So I guess I’ll be on Pinterest looking for more nursery ideas 🙂
Thoughts: I read a lot of blogs of other moms and moms-to-be and many of them consider this the most exciting time – the 2nd trimester, when you start to feel normal again and you get your energy back and you can be all glowy with thick hair and clear skin and be all pregnant-cute. Yeah. I’m excited, of course, but like I said, I feel normal. No crazy emotions, no thicker hair (I don’t think my neck can support much more hair…), still breaking out like a teenager, same. as. usual. So it’s really hard to be so glad the first trimester is over and the second one has begun because it all kind of feels the same. It’s nice to know I’m 1/3 of the way done, but some changes would be nice! Geez, at least give me a non-fat-looking-bump! Or a kick…punch…whatev…
Last – my beautiful friend Lisa and her amazing hubs Rick welcomed their little one, Rowan Kade Hagy, into the world on Friday. She’s amazingly beautiful with a head full of thick, dark hair, and mom and dad are doing fantastic!! I couldn’t be happier for them!!
Check out all of that hair! Enough for a sweet little bow!
Love all of these girls!
